Review

Snow White

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is still a cinematic marvel even decades after its release. Its historical significance isn’t what makes it so highly regarded, though; it’s the artistic detail, emotional depth and storytelling magic that’s lasted, and continues to resonate, among theatergoers.

It was groundbreaking in terms of animation for its time, and still stands as an artistic achievement. Utilizing multiplane cameras, gave depth and realism to the scenes that no animated film had before. The characters (everything from the innocence and grace of Snow White to the menacing figure of the Evil Queen) are well thought-out and striking in their design. All the dwarfs have their strengths, but Dopey usually grasps the attention with his silent movie demeanor.

The musical score is also a highlight of the movie. Songs such as “Heigh-Ho,” “Someday My Prince Will Come” and “Whistle While You Work” became instant classics. The story not only begets these tunes to add to it, but it also adopts them as a means of further rooting us in the respective characters.

Narratively, the film is a straightforward yet powerful good vs. evil story that showcases the importance of kindness, courage, and friendship. Snow White’s resolute optimism and the dwarfs’ loyalty provide a feel-good spine for the story, while the Queen’s dark magic and obsession with beauty offer a chilling counterpoint.

The film is also often criticized for its outdated gender roles, in particular the passivity of Snow White and the notion of salvation through a Prince. But these aspects are simply products of the 1930s and should be appreciated as such. Fortunately, newer adaptations have represented a more empowered depiction of Snow White.

Modern Takes on Snow White

Over the years, Snow White has been adapted as a live-action movie several times. North American fantasy films Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), featuring Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron, offered a bleak, action-packed version of the fairy tale concerned instead with female empowerment and rebellion against a tyrannical regime.

Most recently, Disney has been developing a live-action remake of the original animated feature. Now, while the film promises to keep the essence of the story intact, it has been reported that it will adapt the characters and themes to align them with modern values.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is not just a fairy tale — it’s a milestone of film history. Whether you consider it through a nostalgic lense, or an introduction into classic storytelling, the film proves to be entrancing. The impact it had on animation, music and pop culture is undeniable, and its legacy lives on, inspiring multiple generations of filmmakers and dreamers.
