The long-gestating film finally makes it to the big screen April 25, 2025, having been shot in 2019 and delayed by more than five years. The movie is produced by Ishari K. Ganesh under Vels Film International Ltd, while Yogi Babu, VTV Ganesh, Sathish, S.P. Hosimin appear in the supporting cast. “Sumo” has a blend of humor, action, and heart that will appeal to all audiences, the filmmakers say.

The plot of “Sumo” starts with a man Shiva (Shiva) finding an unconscious man Dr.Akira (who was a doctor working for World Health Organisation) on a lonely beach. What begins as a good deed causes him to become lost in a serpentine rush of events. The stranger, a sumo wrestler from Japan named Tashiro (Yoshinori Tashiro), who has amnesia, arrives in India and forges a soulful friendship with Shiva. Together, the two set out on a quest to restore Tashiro’s lost identity and honor by returning him to Japan for a high-stakes sumo tournament.

It’s not until the story progresses that we understand that the journey Shiva and Tashiro are taking isn’t just physically exhausting, but one of true friendship and loyalty. The film, through the characters’ experiences, addresses the notion of real courage melting through nationalities and cultures. With this, we have a love triangle that deepens the characterization further — the roles of Shiva, Priya Anand and Yogi Babu serve to provide some comic relief in the tale.

Cast and Characters:

One of the highlights of “Sumo” is its performances. Shiva’s comedy timing was good and he gives a decent performance as a well meaning, funny protagonist who gets in too deep. Priya Anand as the female lead, there is some good chemistry between her and Shiva and also her and Yogi Babu that makes the film worthwhile.

Yogi Babu, who is well known for his comic roles in Tamil cinema, adds his charm as usual in the film, making everyone laugh with his witty one-liners. the amnesiac sumo wrestler), deftly playing the beleaguered man struggling to recover his memory and his dignity. VTV Ganesh, Sathish and team are no slouches either, they provide solid performances adding value to the movie.

Music and Technical Aspects :

Nivas K. Prasanna has done the music for Sumo and the background score is in sync with film’s emotional and comic scenes. The music sets the tone for the movie, enhancing the lighthearted comedy and dramatic scenes. Rajeev Menon’s pretty cinematography creates a lush, visually sumptuous experience that transports you to both the otherworldly culture of Japan’s sumo and the warm embrace of India. Praveen K.L.’s editing keeps the film moving at a quick pace, as does the emotional content of the film.

The Long Road to Theaters:

‘Sumo’ encountered hiccups before it was finally released, production starting for the film in 2019 as well. It was initially due in 2021, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed the movie, which had spent a number of years in limbo. The film’s release date was soon confirmed to be on April 25, 2025. In spite of the delays, the film has actually acquired a following since its basing thanks to the buzz surrounding its unusual premise, and all-star ensemble. The FFH trailer, released in 4/25, has also been positively received, and anticipation for the film has been running high.
